Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman
Garden City: Doubleday 1965 - "REPENT HARLEQUIN!" SAID THE TICKTOCKMAN. Fine Long Unbound Galleys. Signed Letter of Provenance. Long unbound galleys for first hardcover appearance (Nebula Award Stories 1965 edited by Damon Knight) of the short story "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman." Signed. Five galley sheets (the complete story) for one of Harlan Ellison's most famous short stories and one of the ten most reprinted modern American short stories. The author's own copy of the galleys, VERY POSSIBLY UNIQUE. The sheets show one fold each, brown otherwise fine. with a photograph of the author taken c. 1964, about the time he wrote "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman." Fine. WITH a signed, full-page typed letter of provenance from the author, stating in part: "The appended congeries of materials come straight out of my file labeled 'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman. They are various tearsheets, page proofs, galleys and incunabula accrued through the years. . . and if you ask me to codify the sources from whence came these curiousities, I must ask that you NUHJ Mr. Levin for same. I'm merely the source of this paper file, he's the expert. That's why he gets the big bucks. Attested to, and sworn in blood, [signed, in what we hope is really brown ink) Harlan Ellison." Fine. The five galley sheets, photograph and letter of provenance are very handsomely framed together under glass, employing a seven-window (opening) linen mat with a black bead (liner). The frame measures approximately 5 x 2 1/2 feet. Three remaining items from the "Repent, Harlequin" file are contained in two envelopes hidden behind a trap door in the back of the frame. Shipping this quite large piece requires extra expense in professional art crating, and probable shipping by FedEx. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
