Das sechste Theil der Neuwen Welt: Oder Der Historien Hieron. Benzo von Meylandt das dritte Buch ( Grands Voyages / Great voyages Pars VI - on the travels of Girolamo Benzoni in Peru and other parts of South America)
- Part VI of De Bry’s Great Voyages, in German language. Franckfurt am Main, Johan Feyerabend, 1597 (first German edition). Folio size. 61 (of 62) leaves of text; followed by a double page map of Cuzco and 27 (of 28) plates with descriptive text. This is fair copy. No binding, book block broken into two sections. Engraved title page missing (the separate title page which precedes the plate section is present and contains the printer’s information and year of issue). The map of South America is not present in this copy. Text section with browning or spotting, sometimes heavier. Some old underlining in red pencil throughout, a few instances of very old handwritten erasures in ink, probably by a Spanish censor (de Bry was a protestant. The two paragraphs that are completely inked out, on Folio’s 8 and 9, clearly have religious passages about a “false prophet” which must have caused the dislike of the censor). On Folio 53 and 54, a portion of the text has been clipped out (53 at bottom, 54 at top) – this may have been done by the same censor. Folio 56 lacks completely. One page with a corner chipped off. In the plate section, plate 8 lacks. Four plates with bottom margins reinforced (long ago). The plates are in good condition with a strong imprint, in this section there is none of the browning which is present in the text section, only some general age toning. Plan of Cuzco with some uniform age toning, two small tears near bottom of centre fold neatly backed, otherwise in very good condition. Throughout the book, a few small marginal tears have been neatly backed. A few pages have a light damp stain in the margin. Despite the flaws mentioned, still a collectible working copy of this rare book, one of the earliest illustrated sources on Peru. **** The 28 plates were probably engraved by de Bry's son, Johann Theodore. The source data from which de Bry used to obtain information for this part of his series about America, was a little book written by an Italian adventurer, Girolamo Benzoni, who travelled extensively from 1541 to 1555 throughout the West Indies, Central and South America. The plates in this part show many scenes from Pizarro's exploits in Peru and the cruelties committed there. [Attributes: First Edition]
