Macmillan and Co, London 1889 - Hardcover. First Edition. An important and evocative presentation copy, inscribed by Tennyson: "Emily Ritchie from Tennyson Decr 1889." There are also Tennyson's small manuscript revisions on pages 145 and 150. Emily Ritchie met Tennyson in 1869 and become a good friend of the poet. She in fact wrote The Greatest Honour of My Life: Emily Ritchie's Recollections of Tennyson. This book had belonged to Anne Thackeray Ritchie, the daughter of William Makepeace and bears her bookplate. Anne had married her cousin Richmond Ritchie in 1877 and his sister Emily was her sister-in law. Tennyson presented this copy of his book to Emily. From the library of Myles Standish Slocum with his signature in pencil. Bound in original green cloth with title in gilt to spine. In near fine condition. Housed in a fine custom dark-red morocco slipcase. 175 pages. POE/053013. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
