[Photo Album] World War II South Pacific
New Jersey, Virginia, California, Japan: circa 1940. Oblong octavo. Brown leather over paper covered boarded embossed with a large eagle and the words "photographs" stamped in gilt measuring 11.5" x 14". Contained within are approximately 280 black and white photographs measuring from 1.5" x 1.25" to 3.5" x 5" with some captions. A collection put together by an American solider during World War II while stationed in various parts of the United States and the Pacific. The album begins with training on the East coast starting in New Jersey with pictures captioned, "guns" and "more guns." From there they head to Virginia with images of rows of trucks, men hiding in bushes with machine guns, and shirtless men in a field. Further along in the album are camouflage training and a plane with a caption "plane trying to locate us." A large majority of the end of the album depicts a tour of duty in Japan and the South Pacific with pictures of soldiers and islanders. There are dozens of images of native huts, boats, and families from Sansapor in Dutch New Guinea dated October 1944 shortly after the Battle of Sansapor. Here the native people of the island can be seen donning grass skirts with some of the younger women posing in semi-glamour shots and others of full clans. The next base was in the Philippines, followed by Yokahama, Japan. The villages are all documented with markets, locals, and soldiers posing around the towns. The last picture is from November of 1945 of our young war hero back in the United States, smiling under a flag. A dense war photo collection, especially of the villages affected by the Japanese use of the South Pacific.
