Kneller, 3 double-page maps by Keyser, engraved portraits views and plates on 113 sheets (some double-page or folding, including large folding panoramas of ‘Moskow’ and ‘Spahan’) and 49 illustrations within text, vol.1 title with repaired marginal tear, F1 short tear at foot, within text, but with no loss, 3E3 re-margined, panorama of Moscow spotted at foot, and with water-staining to varying degrees to upper corners; vol.2 a couple of double-page plates with lower margin neatly restored, S2 re-margined, both vol. some light browning, mostly to plates, some spotting, foxing or finger-marking, a few small stains. Contemporary polished calf, gilt, rebacked, preserving original richly gilt backstrips (with some loss), each with double black morocco labels, corners little worn, rubbed. *** First edition in English of this beautifully illustrated work. The landscape painter Le Bruyn began his extensive journey in 1701 and arrived in Persia in 1703. His account contains observations of the various cities and their customs, flora & fauna and antiquities, particularly the ruins of Persopolis. He was possibly the first European traveller to visit Pasargarde. Wilson p.33.
