Cassell 1891 - First edition. Three volumes, all in original cinnamon cloth lettered in gilt on the spines. A near fine set, with the hinges of vols II and III showing a little wear and a couple of trivial marks to the covers, but a generally bright crisp set. Housed in a quarter morocco box. Regarded, critically speaking, as Barrie's best work of literature, this melodramatic work was a great success on publication, vying with Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles for the year's most hotly read and discussed new novel. It was adapted for the stage in 1897 and filmed on several occasions, most notably in 1934 staring Katherine Hepburn. Set in rural 1840s Scotland, the plot focuses class and social issues. The setting is based on Barrie's place of birth, Kirriemuir. Sadlier 167 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
