Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes, 1880–81 - 2 volumes, octavo. Vol. 1 in original green sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, front cover decorated in black, cream endpapers; vol. 2 in later red half cloth, unlettered, marbled sides. Vol. 1 inner hinges reinforced with cloth at an early date, a very few trivial spots; vol. 2 outer leaves very faintly toned in margins; withal a good set. First edition of both parts. Throughout the 1870s Johanna Spyri published stories for adults and children based around her reminiscences of growing up in rural Switzerland. But huge success came with the publication of Heidi, the most important Swiss contribution to children's literature after the "Swiss Family Robinson" of J. R. Wyss. As usual with Christmas books, the first book was published in December 1879 but dated the following year. Doderer III, 447; Hürlimann 310; Seebass II, 1930 ("rare", vol. 2 only); Wegehaupt III, 3633 (vol. 2 only); Weilenmann 3216 & 3233.
