BACKGROUND TO DANGER - SIGNED, OTTO PENZLER'S COPY
Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1937 - First Printing. Octavo; variant orange cloth, with titles and design stamped in black on spine and front panel; 280pp, [2]. Signed by Ambler on the title page. Minor offset to pastedowns, else Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped, with a touch of rubbing to edges and joints, and a few tiny, faint pink smudges on the rear panel. This copy came from the distinguished British Espionage collection of publisher and bibliophile Otto Penzler, who served as Ambler's American publisher later in his career. Laid in to this copy is a brief note written in Penzler's hand on Mysterious Press stationary stating: "I have also had a copy identical in every way, except that the binding was red cloth." Basis for the 1943 Raoul Walsh film starring George Raft, Brenda Marshall, and Peter Lorre, following the screenplay written by W.R. Burnett. A superb copy of a title that is rarely encounted signed, much less with such a terrific association between author and publisher. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
