Gabriel Waree, Paris 1807 - 110 pp. Original 3/4 leather with brown/pink/green marbled boards. Leather corners and are rubbed, boards bit rubbed, spine aged with gilt missing only half the label still present, spine tips chipped. End papers a bit oxidized. Title page has gift inscription to Vere henry Foster dated 1845 as well as a French stamp, pages have minimal foxing, some storage creasing to the page corners, otherwise clean and unmarked, binding sturdy. Published in the same year as the first edition (printed in Rome) this is an account of the Ottoman court, written by Beauvoisins who was held as a prisoner-of-war for three years in Greece and Turkey betweeen 1799 and 1801. His book describes the family of the Sultan "and explains the functions of the vast army of Ottoman servants and -court attendants" (Blackmer Catalogue). Vere Henry Foster, whose book this was (1819-1900) was a member of the Irish Foreign Service until he resigned to devote his life to bettering the Irish lower class. He contributed funds for over 25,000 Irish to emigrate to the U.S. , and supported teachers and schools in Ireland.
