The Story of the Charmed Fawn.
NY John McLoughlin c. 1852 - 12mo. (24) pp.With six full-page illustrations by Harrison Weir, whose name is misspelled on the title page. One illustration is reproduced in color on the front wrapper. This is one title in the "Pleasure Books for Children", and there is an advertisement on the back wrapper showing the eleven other titles in this series. According to the publication information on the lower front wrapper, this book was printed by McLoughlin as the successor to Elton & Co., the publishing firm in which McLoughlin's father was a partner. The Elton name remains on the title page, and the back wrapper shows McLoughlin's Tryon Row address. Elton was identified as having occupied the Tryon Row address between 1852 and 1853; McLoughlin took over Elton around 1850 and moved the company to 24 Beekman Street in 1854. Examples of this work are known with the Beekman St address with a McLoughlin imprint, and copies are known with an Elton imprint showing their 18 Division address, which precedes Tryon Row by a year (1851-1852). It would appear, then, that this is a rare variant issue, of which we could locate only one possible recorded copy in institutional holdings.Original printed wrappers show minor soiling, a small chip to lower corner of front wrapper; several light spots internally. Overall a very good or better copy. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
