Forts Royal and Edward in the Island of Martinique
1800 1800 - Joshua Gosselin (1739-1813) Forts Royal and Edward in the Island of Martinique Ink and gray wash drawing on paper Paper size: 9 1/2” x 15 3/4”; framed size: 20 3/4” x 27 1/8” (measurements in inches) Initialed and dated: J:G 1800 Gosselin’s watercolor view of Martinque was most probably copied from an original view and an engraved version of it was reproduced in Reverend Cooper Willyams An Account of the campaign in the West Indies, in the year 1794, published in London in 1796. In it, the artist has skillfully mastered the modulation of many tones of gray to create a harmonious view of the island.
