After taking part in the battle of Algiers in 1817, Lyon accompanied Mr. Ritchie, the secretary of the embassy at Paris, on his African travels to find the course of the Niger River and the location of Timbuktu. The expedition was underfunded and had little support. They left Tripoli in March 1819 and reached Murzuk a month later, where both were taken ill and Richie eventually died. Lyon pushed on, despite 133 degree temperatures, lack of funds, and the suspicion of the sultan, and reached the southern border of Fezzan before being forced to return, more dead than alive, to Tripoli. Capt. Lyon, by all accounts a fun loving extrovert, displayed an aspect of personality that was notably rare at the time, this being a genuine interest in the "Natives" of the countries he visited. In an exploit predating Sir Richard Burton’s famous trip to Mecca by decades, wearing Arab/Muslim dress and having learned fluent Arabic Lyon managed to blend in with the inhabitants of North Africa. These skills were of no doubt great help in his effort to get back to Tripoli alive. In spite of the expedition being a complete failure Lyon’s narrative was well received by the public. His writing style is entertaining and informal and he was particularly well know for his skills as a watercolourist, as the plates in this volume reproduced from his own paintings will attest. Lyon later accompanied Parry to the arctic (1821-23), and served as commissioner of the Real del Monte Mining company in Mexico (1825-27). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
