Sketches in Architecture; consisting of original designs for cottages and rural dwellings, suitable for persons of moderate fortune, and for convenient retirement; with plans and appropriate scenery to each . new edition
S. Gosnell for J. Taylor, London 1823 - Original paper-covered boards, letterpress title label to backstrip (extremities bumped), modern green cloth chemise, all within a modern green morocco-backed cloth slipcase, titled in gilt on 'spine' A very fine large uncut copy of the second edition of Dearn's work, concentrating on designs for "cottages and rural dwellings, suitable to persons of moderate fortune." 'In the Plans now laid before the Public, it has been my endeavour to furnish a series of designs, which should meet the taste of others without discrediting my own; and my presenting a selection of Plans and Elevations in which economy forms a prominent feature, and not beyond the reach of persons in moderate circumstances, to render them extensively useful, and applicable to the purposes of genteel life' (p.15). In line with Dearn's stated aim of providing plans for smaller buildings, the largest house shown (a 'villa in the cottage style') includes four bedrooms, whilst the smallest house shown is actually one of a pair of entrance lodges, each with only two rooms in total. Cf. Archer 60-61; cf. RIBA I,825-826; (13 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches). Uncut, half-title, small format 20pp. publisher's catalogue bound at rear. 20 plates (5 engraved, 15 uncoloured aquatint plates after Rosenberg, printed in sepia). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
