Pariggi [Paris], Maceo Ruette 1619 - Royal octavo (230 x 170mm). Pp. 112, (16). Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, many illustrated initials. Hardcover, bound in full pale calf, rebacked, panelled sides roll-tooled in blind, floral corner-pieces, rubbed and chafed in places, spine with raised bands, endpapers bit creased, few brown spots. A very good copy in fine internal condition. ~ Lipsius p. 422. Cf. Cicognara 3054, listing the first edition of 1555. Vico Enea (1523-1567). A native of Parma, he worked mostly in Florence. Published "Augustarum imagines aereis formis expressae". Provenance: The Samuel Weare Gardiner's (1821-1866) copy(?), with the armorial bookplate bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("Shame upon him who thinks evil of it"), mounted onto first pastedown; and with the heraldic bookplate of the Deene Library, "En grace affie" ("On grace depend"), mounted onto verso of title-page. Both plates, finely engraved on copper, are of particular charm.
