The Society for Improving the Conditions of the Labouring Classes, 21, Exeter Hall, Strand, London - Sixth thousand, revised and augmented edition. Not dated, but 1867 per the preface, half title, [16], [1], 2-139 pp, 35 plates, which includes the fine plate of the Windsor Royal Society's Cottages for the Working Classes, numerous illustrations, printed by WM Watts, Gray's-Inn Road, London. Housed in blue embossed boards with bright gilt title to front cover, edges bumped a little, there are 3 small stains to the rear cover. Internally there is a small address and ownership signature to the fep. There is some very minor foxing to the last few pages. An important title. Title continues: The essentials of healthy dwelling. Illustrated by references to the model houses of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, of His Royal Highness the Late Prince Consort. with plans and elevations of dwellings adapted to towns and to rural districts. Henry Roberts, architect and housing reformer, his views, including his opposition to easily available mortgages because of their inflationary effects on house prices, still have relevance, while he perceived the state would always have to intervene to house those incapable of self-help. see ODNB.
