Deutschlands Fauna in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen, Abt. V: die Insecten: Käfer. I-XXIII (complete).
- Nürnberg, 1805-1857. 23 volumes in 16. Small 8vo. With 425 engraved plates (I-CCCXXIV, CCXVI[bis]) of which 419 hand-coloured or partly coloured. Contemporary and later cloth and half calf.* A complete set of the Coleoptera of Germany. Single volumes are rare, a complete set, like this one, is virtually impossible to find. Jacob Sturm (1771-1848) was the most famous illustrator of entomological publications in Germany during the early 19th century. and it is obvious why. All volumes are uncut, in 19th century full cloth with gilt number on spine, except volumes I and IV (matching half calf over blue boards, cut, edges dyed red), and XVI-XIX (two bound in one, contemporary half calf over grained boards, ornamental gilt on spine, cut, edges speckled), and XII-XIV, XX-XXIII (three, and four volumes bound in one, later half cloth matching the full cloth parts. Uncut). Volumes 16 and 17 bound in reverse order, last 11 pages of parts XIV and XXIII trimmed. Front board of volume I detached. Small stamp on lower margin of title-pages. Some age-toning and offsetting, as usual, but the plates mostly clean and with bright colouring. In all a good, complete set. Hagen II, p. 204; Horn-Schenkling, Nissen ZBI, 4033.(Postage on this item might be more than indicated, please inquire) [Attributes: Hard Cover]
