Hunt and Clarke, London 1828 - Two volumes. (lxxvi, 473; 545). Gray cloth-covered boards.Panelled spines, red and black leather labels. Fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed. New endpapers.Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. Light off-setting onto title-page. Most pages uncut at top, some at fore-edge as well. Volume 1 has two folding plans; one of the Solace Gardens of Schwetzingen, Germany; the other of Karlsrhue. An errata slip is attached at the end. Volume 2 has a large folding map of the course of the Mississippi River with 2 small tears and slight browning at one fold. Volume 2 also has three full-page plates at the end showing Indian artifacts and apparel. Plates are lightly foxed, mainly on periphery. Volume 1 recounts the author's travels in England, France, Germany, and Italy. Volume 2 is devoted to his travels among Northwestern American Indian tribes. Some authorities have disputed the accuracy of the narration and even doubted the discovery claims. Several letters regarding this dispute are included in the preface of Volume 1.
