Some rubbing, minor wear to head of spines & corners; joints beginning to crack, but quite firm. Nice set. Book-plates of Charles Atwood Kofoid and Herbert McClean Evans. This edition, published in France, was pirated from the first edition published in Leiden in the same year (which had only 13 plates). 'Trembley was one of the pioneers of experimental morphology. [This] work records how he cut hydras into several pieces, producing new individuals, and how, by cutting up the latter, he obtained a third generation. His experiments were of great importance to the study of regeneration of lost parts, he was the first to make permanent grafts and to witness cell-division' (Garrison-Morton).[Nissen ZBI 4163].
