In Persian] The Gulistan.
circa 1800 - 8vo. Text in Persian in black with red highlights; last leaf repaired in gutter. Contemporary Islamic red morocco, blindstamped border to covers, central panel consisting of blind-stamped arabesque and blindstamped cornerpieces; lightly rubbed. Pleasantly bound manuscript of one of the most famous works of Persian literature. The Gulistan, or Rose Garden, was completed in 1258 and "is mainly in prose and contains stories and personal anecdotes. The text is interspersed with a variety of short poems, containing aphorisms, advice, and humorous reflections. Saadi demonstrates a profound awareness of the absurdity of human existence. The fate of those who depend on the changeable moods of kings is contrasted with the freedom of the dervishes" (Wikipedia).
