"The expeditionary force of British and Canadian troops, about 1700 in all, was mobilized in Toronto in May 1870. The six hundred mile journey from Port Arthur on Thunder Bay to Fort Garry at what is now Winnipeg was by road to Lake Shebandowan, then by the 'Old Canoe Route' through Lac le Croix and Rainy Lake to Lake of the Woods and down the Winnipeg River to Lake Winnipeg, then up the Red River to Fort Garry. A few minutes before the expeditionary forces marched into Fort Garry on August 24, Reil and his remaining supporters road away up the Red River. This map is the best for that region which I have seen" (Streeter). The maps are titled: 1) Map shewing Line of Route between Lake Superior and Red River Settlement, compiled from S. J.
