Officina Blaviana Apud Ionnem Blaeu, Amsterdam 1662 - The map itself measures 20" x 15 14". Light water-staining along bottom map border not affecting the map. Four small round wormholes at bottom edge and 3/4" wormhole just left of the map fold at bottom. Hand-colored map of Lauderdale, a long and narrow geographical district in the Scottish Borders. The great Roman Road traveled through the area on way to Edingurgh. Beautiful ornate engraved cartouche with J. Blaeu at bottom left of the map, engraved place name near top center. (See photographs). From Volume V of the "Nuevo Atlas de Los Reynos de Escocia e Yrland", printed in 1662 by Joan Blaeu. The maps in Blaeu's atlases were based on the work of Timothy Pont, a pioneer Scottish cartographer. The Blaeu maps of Scotland are rather scarce, printed only between 1654 and 1672. The Spanish edition is also quite scarce, published in 10 of a proposed 12 volumes in 1662. Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) learned his trade from his father, produced fine quality hand-colored maps in his shop in Amsterdam and was one of the premier mapmakers of his time. Map description is in Spanish. Size: 24 1/2" x 21 3/4"
