Collection de Cent-Vingt Estampes, gravees d’apres les tableaux & dessins qui composoient le cabinet de M. Poullain
1781 - With 120 plates after Brueghel, Rembrandt and Rubens, a splendid copy with Irish Provenance. 1781. Paris. Basan et Poignant. In 4to (298 mm x 215 mm). 2 ff. + 22 + 1 ff. 120 plates in 116 ff. Green morocco by F. Bedford, boards with gilt fillets, corner pieces, spine with raised bands, tooled and lettered in gilt, inner dentelle, some minor rubbing. All plates interleaved with blanks, minor foxing, and some plates with light toning. First edition. A remarkable work made to illustrate the collection of M. Poullain, coordinated and executed under Basan’s (1723 – 1797) direction. The engraved plates are after paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Veronese, Van Dyck, Brueghel, and others; it also includes a short biography of the artists at the beginning. All the plates are in strong impressions and made on heavy-laid paper. The book has a distinguished provenance: from the library of Ernest Augustus Earl of Lisburne, ex libris on front paste down (a title in the Peerage of Ireland, created in 1776 for Wilmot Vauhhan, Ernest Augustus is likely the 4th or 5th Earl); with bookseller’s ticket on first blank “T. & W. Boone 29, New Bond Street”. Thomas and William Boone were brothers and preeminent members of the London book trade. Cohen-de-Ricci, 116. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
