The success of Sheraton's publication is reflected in the lengthy lists of subscribers and in the quick succession of editions in 1794-1796 and in 1802. Sheraton's "reputation exists entirely on the publication of three books of furniture designs, the first of which was The cabinet maker and upholsterer's drawing book, which was published in fortnightly numbers between 1791 and 1793 . The list of subscribers included cabinet-makers and upholsterers in London and all over the provinces as well as Scotland . Parts I and II of the Drawing book were devoted to extensive dissertations on geometry and perspective, while Part III was intended . to exhibit the present taste for furniture, and at the same time give the workman some assistance in the manufacturing part of it." (White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th-century Furniture Design. p. 57). The numbering of the plates is haphazard to say the least, leading to some bibliographical confusion; this copy, however, is complete with the engraved frontispiece (including its preceding letterpress explanation leaf) and 112 engraved plates. Berlin Catalogue 1234. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
