Le Fabbriche e i Disegni di Andrea Palladio
La Roccia, Trento, Italy 1976 - The original edition Volume I of Scamozzi's four volume work was published in Vicenza in 1776, the same year in which Thomas Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence. This facsimile edition was published on the occasion of the Andrea Palladio Exhibition and represents the contribution of the Republic of Italy to the American bicentennial celebration. This is a limited edition of unstated limitation. The book consists of unbound single sheets measuring 18.75 x 12.75 inches and folded double sheets measuring 18.75 x 25.5 inches. Includes: introductory double-sheet; title page for Vol. I; portrait of Palladio; 52 numbered plates; index page; title page for Vol. II; 51 plates; index page; title page for Vol. III; 52 plates; index page; title page for Vol. IV; 54 plates. 209 plates total, not counting the portrait. All plates in B&W on medium-weight matte stock. Many of the plates are double-page. Note that as to Vol. III, Plates XXXII and XXXIII are on the same page and the same is true for Plates XXXV and XXXVI. All plates are immensely clean and rather crisp. No tears, marks or other demerits observed, except that a few plates have very light bends or semi-creases, fairly trivial. Previous owner name on the front blank sheet of the introductory double-sheet in a large but neat blue ink hand. Blindstamp of previous owner on the second page of the same double-sheet. Housed in a large, custom clamshell box, heavy-duty. Clamshell box with leatherette spine, marbled paper hardboards and metal clasps. The gilt-stamped lettering to the spine is very faded. Previous owner name on the inside front of the case in a large but neat blue ink hand. Some scuffing to the marbled paper near the top of the front of the case. The clamshell box is quite distressed, having broken along the top and bottom edges, but is fully present. Nevertheless the box has done an excellent job protecting the contents. A Near Fine set of unbound prints in facsimile in a Fair Only clamshell case. Size: Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
