Internally, a.e.g, dark green endpapers, MS ownership dedication (Williams Wynn 1894), half title, tissue guarded frontis, publishers marque to verso, [5], (vi) only, [2], [2], 3-212 pp, 1 pl, 35 illustrations (B&W, 19 of which are full page), 7 illustrated headers, printed by R&R Clark, Edinburgh, small almost invisible mark to front cover right corner, small cloth repair to spine base, there were 7000 copies printed, reprinted twice in 1894, 1895, then once each in 1896, 97, 98 & 1899. (Richards A76. Martindell 61. Grolier 185). The adventures of Mowgli, a boy reared by a pack of wolves, and the wild animals of the jungle. Seven stories, seven poems. There has yet been no writer of short stories in English to challenge his achievement, which ranges through space from India to the home counties, and through time from Stone Age man to the contemporary world of football matches and motor cars. These stories, moreover, exhibit every kind of treatment, from the farcical to the tragic, and their structures vary from the simplest anecdote to the most complex and allusive philosophical fiction, dense enough to support endless exegesis and commentary.
