Magnalia Christi Americana; or, the Ecclesiastical History of New England from Its First Planting in the Year 1620, Unto the Year of Our Lord 1698
Hartford; 1855 & 1853: Silas Andrus and Son Second American edition. Besides his involvement in the Salem witchcraft debacle (1692-93), his most famous legacy is his Puritan epic "Magnalia Christi Americana" which was first published in 1702, an ecclesiastical history of New England in the contemporary tradition of providence literature. In seven books Mather commemorates virtually every aspect of New England's formative period (1620-1698). Mather's Plutarchan biographies of New England's governors and ministers (book 2) are of great interest. In two volumes, (seven parts) portrait frontispieces of Mather, 626 and 681pp., bound in 3/4 brown morocco over brown cloth, raised bands, title gilt, all edges marbled, early owner's bookplate, small newspaper clipping about Mather on front pastedown, faint marginal damp stain to first few leaves of volume two. A very nice set showing general rubbing along spine. This work has become increasingly scarce.[Howes-391) . Octavo.
