Ellis 1870 - First edition, "Fine Paper" or "Whatman Paper" or "Deluxe Edition" copy, 19 x 12cm (8vo), bound by Zaehnsdorf (stamped in gilt to lower fr. turn-in) in burgundy morocco w/gilt ruling to covers & gilt decorations & title to spine, 5 raised bands, a.e.g., decorative gilt turn-ins, burgundy floral on cream ep.s, 2 extra leaves to fr. & 2 to rear, [i-vii] viii-xi [xii], [1] 2-282 [283-84] pp. Unstated limited edition of 12 copies printed on watermarked "J Whatman 1870" handmade paper by Strangeways & Walden, London. With the 1907 armorial bookplate of John Ingleby Jefferson (of Northallerton, 1853-1929), & bookseller's ticket of Myers & Co. (London), both to fr. pastedown. Binding Near-Fine (lt. rubbing to extremities, & ½" rub spot to fr. pastedown); contents Near-Fine (clipped description tipped to head of 1st blank, & the occas. minor stain). While not in its original gilt-decorated cream cloth w/orange-on-white ep.s, this is a brilliant copy of the rarest issue of D.G. Rossetti's published works, in a handsome Zaehnsdorf binding. Rossetti 17 ("there were also . 12 copies on fine paper" p.18), Ashley IV 132 ("I was informed by William Rossetti that these twelve copies were prepared in accordance with his brother's instructions for the purpose of presentation; the large paper copies were placed on sale in the customary manner"), Fredeman "Woodman" ("JPRS" NS5) pp.19 & 31.
