Lot of fifty-four British Patents for Maritime Application, 1860s and 1870s
A wonderful, whimsical assortment of ideas for improving maritime technology, some far-fetched, but all serious enough to have jumped through the hoops necessary to obtain formal patents. All are multi page documents; most are accompanied by illustrations explaining the patented concept. Many of these are large and elaborate; some suitable for display. Included are floating docks, pontoons, life saving appliances, methods of propulsion, windlasses and capstans, caissons, methods of raising and lowering boars, dredging, repairing leaks, cleaning bottoms, anchors, rudders and more. All are ex-libris Franklin Institute, many with their oval stamp, just a few with stamps on drawings. Some drawings tanned at folds. The lot of fifty-four patents
