Original red cloth illustrated in black with gilt titles to spine and front board, patterned endpapers/ Spine rolled and sunned, tiny nicks to tips, mild spotting to some endleaves, but on a whole a remarkably sound, fresh and attractive copy in very good condition. Illustrated plates and vignette engravings throughout by Beard. 32pp publisher's advertisements dated October 1889 at rear. First edition (preceding the publication of the American edition by a few days), first issue with "The S King" to the illustration at p.43, of Twain's satirical interpolation of a 19th-century Connecticut Yankee into the mediaeval world of Malory's Morte Darthur. This copy bears on the front pastedown the mid-century armorial bookplate of Henry Frederick Thynne, 6th Marquess of Bath JP (1905-92), one of the "Bright Young People" of the 1920s. BAL 3429.
