General View of the Agriculture of the County of Fife: With Observations on the Means of Its Improvement: Drawn Up for the Consideration of the Board of Agriculture & Internal Improvement
8vo. Full calf. viii, 413pp. Foldout map frontispiece, floor plans, illustrations, tables. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear, but clean, tight and attractive -- and the entire text block is shockingly handsome and free of foxing and edge tears. The often-absent large foldout frontispiece map -- "Map of the County of Fife" -- is in very good condition, with just the slightest bits of foxing. A superb first edition of this scarce study. Front pastedown bears the handsome simple bookplate of "Captn. Halkett , / Royal Navy." Sir Peter Halkett (1765-1839) was a senior British naval officer best known for his French Revolutionary War service; he was promoted to rear-admiral in 1812 and was a commander in the West Indies (1836-37) before he became the 6th Baronet of Pitfirrane in Fife. Overall a quite lovely first edition of an important agricultural study of the famed Scottish county surrounded by more water than any Scottish county and reknowned for its agricultural wealth.
