A PAIR OF WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS. FISHERMEN'S BEACH FOLKESTONE and THE PIER HEAD, FOLKESTONE LOOKING TOWARDS DOVER. Two leaves from one of Callow's sketchbooks, showing a jumble of upturned boats and flotsam and jetsam, and a huddle of figures sheltering in the foreground. Together with another leaf from the same sketchbook, showing the old harbour head before the coming of the railway, where there is a simple mast flying a red flag, loafing figures and the cliffs to Dover in the distance.
n.d. but c 1840 - Pair of watercolour drawings on paper, each 7 x 4 inches, mounted, framed and glazed in conservation materials. Recently returned from professional removal of old backing board, stabilization and minor restoration. The painting is free of blemish and the pigment is un-faded. Both watercolours are in fine condition. The delicate workmanship of a master watercolourist is here recorded from his sketchbook, and the speed of working provides an almost instantaneous impression, giving the viewer a feeling associated with the instant of a snapshot. Unlike most snaps the composition is immaculate. provenance A sketchbook of Callow's watercolours was broken up in the 1970s and dispersed by a London Gallery. Details are on the backing boards of the old frames, which have been replaced in the backs of the new frames. PRINTS/MAPS FOLKESTONE PRINTS/MAPS
