Map of Western Palestine from surveys conducted for the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund.
1881 - London: Stanford's Geographical Establishment, 1881. Original colour. Lithographic map, dissected and laid on linen with marbled covers, total 1600 x 960mm. Publisher's slip case, worn. Some pencil and ink marginalia. Lord Kitchener, later to be the Secretary of State for War and the highest-ranking British officer to be killed in the First World War, spent his early years in the army as a surveyor. He produced two monumental maps: Palestine, on 26 sheets, which took from 1874-77; and a 15-sheet map of Cyprus, published 1885. This was an important survey: not only was it so accurate that it is still consulted by archaeologists and geographers, but also the northern limit of their survey is now the border between Israel and Lebanon.
