Views of the Monastery of Solovki and Environs].
V. Cherepanov Arkhangelsk 1884 - Oblong 4to (25 x 33 cm), 35 lithographed plates including one folding, three in sepia, three coloured, all captioned and some with text in Cyrillic; upper corner frayed at beginning. Original printed wrappers; soiled and frayed, with small losses, backstrip defective. Uncommon and fragile publication with attractive lithographed views of one of Russia's most famous monastery - unusually printed in Arkhangelsk, Russia's major port on the White Sea. Solovki Archipelago consists of six large and many small islands in the Onego Gulf of the White Sea in northernmost Russia close to the Arctic Circle. The area was famous for the vast and wealthy monastery founded in 1436. It thrived for many decades on agriculture and fishing and survived until the Russian Revolution. As shown on this rich pictorial record it included a fortress and cathedral as well as many other buildings. The monastery famously became under the Soviet regime a harsh prison camp.
