GOD IS NOT GREAT: HOW RELIGION POISONS EVERYTHING - Rare Signed Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing
New York City, NY: Twelve Press, 2007 - 1st Printing. Signed. 307 pages. Published in 2007. The author's account on subject. One of the greatest books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run that sold out immediately after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Christopher Hitchens' sustained and erudite attack on religion. While it has inevitably been compared to much narrower accounts by Richard Dawkins ("The God Delusion", which is grounded in science) and Sam Harris ("Letter To A Christian Nation", which is grounded in the Founding Fathers' vision of a secular state), Hitchens' polemic is the fullest argument against religion on the basis of reason. Its greatest strength is that it is not written in coldly analytical language (of which Hitchens is a master), but in palpable outrage and anger. The book is an eloquent plea for critical thinking, "Public Enemy Number One" of all religions. At the same time, Hitchens' ultimate goal is the liberation of the human soul. As strange as it may sound, Hitchens believes in the soul, and in holiness, just not in the institutional, monotheistic kind. This is something that he shares with (and owes to) Continental philosophy rather than to the Anglo-American empiricist tradition to which he belongs. The transcendent greatness of a thinker like the Jewish-French Emmanuel Levinas lies precisely in his serious exploration of an "ethics beyond ethics" and a "holiness beyond The Holy Land". There is no God in Levinas' phenomenological (and profoundly spiritual) philosophy either any more than there is in Hitchens' empirical atheism. "God did not make us. We made God" (Christopher Hitchens). Christopher Hitchens died of esophageal cancer on December 15, 2011, an irreplaceable loss to contemporary culture. An absolute "must-have" title for Christopher Hitchens collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Christopher Hitchens. He also crossed out his printed name. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Almost all other copies available online are subsequent printings or have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writer/intellectuals of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0446579807. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
