Iron Man [Signed by Burnett, Dust Jacket Signed by its Designer Edna Reindel]
The Dial Press [Lincoln MacVeagh], New York 1930 - A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (fading and some spotting to the topstain, tiny rubs to the spine ends and board corners, a few tiny white spots to the boards, spine lettering a bit weakened, slight tide mark to the bottom corner of the rear free endpaper and to the margin corner of the last two pages of text -- but not affecting the text), in a Very Good + dust jacket (slight chipping to the spine ends and panel edges, push to the rear panel's top edge, small tide mark from the rear flap's bottom right corner extending slightly into the rear panel's lower left corner, expected sunning to the spine panel, spine and front panel images show through on the dust jacket's verso), SIGNED BY W. R. BURNETT on the title page AND with the DUST JACKET SIGNED BY EDNA REINDEL, its designer; the second novel by novelist and screenwriter W. R. Burnett, published in the year following publication of his debut novel, "Little Caesar". The novel centers around Kid Mason, a mechanic's helper turned prizefighter, who, after much perseverance, becomes the middle-weight champion. The book provided the basis for the 1931 movie of the same name, starring Lew Ayres, Robert Armstrong, and Jean Harlow, as well as for the 1951 remake starring Jeff Chandler, Evelyn Keyes, and Rock Hudson. The striking dust jacket is signed by its designer Edna Reindel, the noted Surrealist and American Regionalist painter who, during the Depression, was commissioned to create murals and sculptures around the United States. Copies of Iron Man signed by Burnett are not terribly common, and copies signed both by W. R. Burnett and by Edna Reindel are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very nice copy, SIGNED BY W. R. BURNETT AND SIGNED BY EDNA REINDEL. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
