Tiger & Crocodile
published by James Daniell & Co, London 1799 - A very fine proof impression of the extremely rare first state in etching only, before the addition of any tonal work. This rare print, on Whatman wove paper (watermarked date: 1794) was taken before the plate was cut down to edge of the image, with artist and engraver's names and publication line engraved below the image. The date of publication (June 24th) precedes the final publication date by some months: the final state plate was dated December 7th 1799. The present image is one of a linked group of prints that Northcote arranged to have engraved by Samuel Reynolds, James Murphy and Charles Turner (1774-1857). Northcote explored the theme of fierce confrontations in nature throughout the 1790's. There is nothing quite like it in Western Art: this moment in which a life threatening adversary is suddenly recognized and the instinctual mind mobilizes. It is a split second before the fury erupts. The opponents are poised, completely concentrated and ready. In 1789 Turner was apprenticed to John Jones in London, where from 1795 he studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He began publishing his prints in 1796 and also worked in mezzotint, and occasionally in stipple and aquatint for a variety of publishers, mostly in London but also in Scotland and elsewhere. He was a skilful engraver who could adapt his style to reflect that of the painter; he was also hardworking, reliable and enterprising. The majority of his plates are after contemporary painters and he was the outstanding mezzotint-engraver in England between 1800 and 1840, and sent drawings and prints to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy throughout his career.
