The Street - SIGNED AND INSCRIBED TO THE PUBLISHER WILLIAM MILLER
Weidenfeld and Nicholson 1972 - A first edition, first printing published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1972. A near fine book without inscriptions (some light spotting to the top edge) in a very good+ (or better) wrapper which is unclipped and has one or two closed tears. Signed and inscribed by Richler on the front free endpaper: William/Bob Gottlieb always called/ it ?St Urbain?s Whoresman? - / now Tony has gone one better./See jacket/Affectionately/ Mordecai/. Richler, according to many sources, was unlucky not to have won the 1971 Booker Prize for which he was shortlisted with ?St Urbain?s Horsmen?, losing out to Naipaul?s ?In A Free State?. Signed copies of the UK first edition of ?St Urbain?s? are unknown. Robert Gottlieb was a notorious editor for the likes of John Le Carre and Joseph Heller and a friend of Richler?s. This inscription to William Miller is an important one and a lovely association for any Booker purist. This is the only signed copy of the UK edition we have seen as most of Richler?s titles were signed in Canada. A genuinely scarce signed association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
