Famous Castles & Temples in Japan
[Kelly n.d., ca. 1890s], Tokio - Quite attractively produced and uncommon plate book; one in a series of at least six similar albums issued by Ogawa between 1890 and 1896, all illustrating typical scenes and scenery of Japan. Ogawa was a founding member of the Japan Photographic Society (1889) and the founder, that same year, of one of the first collotype businesses in Japan, the Ogawa Shashin Seihan. (See Terry Bennett's Photography in Japan, 1853-1912 (2013).) OCLC locates four copies in North America as of February, 2017, at the Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard, and the Public Libraries of Cincinnati and Seattle. WENCKSTERN (Japanese Empire ) II:p.9. Oblong folio (26.5x37.5cm.); publisher's string-bound decorative limp paper-covered boards, printed paper label mounted to upper cover and speckled with gilt, all edges gilt, green- and gilt-speckled endpapers; [2]pp. & 35 leaves of hand-colored collotype plates, captions printed in English, tissue guards present; colophon printed in Japanese bound in rear.
