The Diary of T. E. Lawrence MCMXI

Original dark brown seal-skin backed chirigami kozo boards with parchment corner tips, title and Corvinus crow gilt to spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in matching brown cloth slip-case. 13 collotype plates with tissue guards, head-piece printed in gold and black. A few tissue guards loose. Otherwise a fine copy in a slightly mottled slipcase with gently rubbed extremities. First edition, limited to 206 numbered copies, of which only 150 were for sale; this copy is number 92. This 'most ambitious and handsome volume published by the Corvinus Press' (O'Brien) prints the diary kept by Lawrence during his walking tour of Syria in 1911. 'After graduating from Oxford with a First in History, Lawrence was employed, through the influence of D.G. Hogarth, at an archaeological dig in Northern Syria at Carchemish.' When the dig was closed, Lawrence was free to further explore the country on foot through Syria. This copy initially belonged to Doris Anne Cutmore, secretary to the Corvinus Press between 1937 and 1939.
