Rare J. Sharman school atlas (1794) No title page. – "Engraved for Sharman’s Geography"
J. Sharman, Dublin 1794 - EXCESSIVELY RARE IRISH SCHOOL ATLAS. Volumes: 1. Binding: orig. wrappers. Condition: Tears, ink writing, once folded. Only one other complete copy recorded in Worldcat Books; located in West Yorkshire. Only the maps of "Scotland" and "Switzerland" recorded in the 1979 volume of Tooley Dictionary of Mapmakers. No title page. First map, The World, according to the latest discoveries, is dated 1794. A. Keith is recorded as the engraver. We have never seen another copy in over thirty-five years of dealing in geography's and atlases. The map of the United States, only a year after the Peace of Paris, shows the Mississippi River to be the western boundary of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Extensive tears and ink stains throughout. Professionally mended and rebacked. Neat penmanship notes on the Holy Land map and North America. The maps cited in Tooley probably came from an incomplete copy. Found in Pittsburgh, the principal owner was a James McFarland. The McFarland name goes way back in Pittsburgh. A McFarland Road is a major thoroughfare.
