Caroling Dusk. An Anthology of Verse by Negro Poets
New York: Harper, 1927 - "Cullen edited the October 1926 special issue of Palms devoted to African- American poets, and he collected and edited Caroling Dusk in 1927, an anthology of poetry by African Americans. Cullen was by this time generally recognized by critics and the public as the leading literary figure of the Harlem Renaissance" (ANB). Inscribed by the editor on the front flyleaf, "To Edward, This Ebony Symphony, Sincerely, Countee, New York, October 25, 1927". The recipient was Edward G. Perry (ca. 1908- 1955), actor in the London production of Porgy in 1927, and the following year a member of the wedding party at Cullen's marriage to Nina Yolande Du Bois, "the social event of the decade in Harlem" (ANB). A fine anthology with biographical notes on the contribtuors: a who's who of African- American poets including: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Alice Dunbar Nelson, Claude McKay, James Weldon Johnson, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, Sterling Brown, W.E.B. Du Bois, Arna Bontemps, Waring Cuney, Edward S. Silveira, Cullen, and others First editiion. 8vo. Decorations by Aaron Douglas. xxii, [2], 237, [1, imprint] pp. Black cloth, rose paper label on upper cover, floral patterned endpapers. Slightly rubbed (small loss to cloth of back top corner), front inner hinge tender. Some pencil tick marks throughout. Very good copy, lacking the jacket [Attributes: Hard Cover]
