Waverley Novels (48 Volumes Complete, Border Edition, Limited Edition of 365)
John C. Nimmo, London 1892 - A spectacular, complete set of the Waverley Novels, 48 volumes total, published between 1892 and 1894, Border Edition, Limited Edition of 365 sets (this being number 205), with introductory essays and notes by Andrew Lang, bound in full calf leather. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was an amazingly talented man, serving daily in the law profession and politics while at the same time writing a large body of work. In addition to the Waverley Novels (for which he is considered the inventor of the genre of the modern historical novel), he was also a poet and playwright, authored volumes of history, essays, and a biography on Napoleon Bonaparte. ***ABOUT THE EDITOR: Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a prodigious author and literary critic; his work in 1899 as editor of the Gadshill Edition of the works of Charles Dickens is highly regarded. However, it is with the Waverley Novels that Andrew Lang¿s talents truly shone: his biographer, Roger Lancelyn Green, stated ¿the Introductions to the ¿Border Edition¿ of the Waverley Novels contain much of Lang¿s best criticism and appreciation¿. ***ABOUT THE NOVELS: While many of us today are only aware of select titles such as Ivanhoe or Rob Roy, the Waverley novels are a lengthy collection of 27 historical novels written by Sir Walter Scott, and were among the most popular and widely-read novels in Europe, North America, and Australia for almost a century. Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, after most of the books had been published, which is why the series is referred to by the title of the first book, Waverley. Our set includes all of the novels usually included, with the addition of the Chronicles of Canongate (first series). ***DESCRIPTION: Limited edition of 365 sets, this being set number 205, the Border Edition, published between 1892 and 1894, printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co., at the Ballantyne Press, Edinburgh, bound in full tan calf leather with a narrow double-ruled border on both the front and back boards, spines highly decorated in gilt, red spine labels with gilt lettering, top edge gilt, inner dentelles in gilt, blue marbled endpapers, printed on Arnold¿s unbleached hand-made paper, title pages in red and black, lettered tissue-guarded etchings printed as proofs before letters, tipped-in and signed by both artist and engraver. The volumes each have five to six etchings for a total of 250 for the set, done by different artists including J.E. Millais who created the frontispiece for volume XI. Pagination runs between 248 and 490 pages per book, with the average being 345 pages. Special dedication leaves bound into volumes I and V. At the end of the final volume there is a 6-page Addenda to Editor¿s Notes and Introduction followed by a 7-page Corrigenda. ***CONDITION: As a whole the set is in near fine condition, with every volume having a strong, square text block and solid hinges, none having had restoration work done, the entire set is completely clean internally and free of prior owner markings, most of the corners are square, a few show minor rubbing. There are scattered minor scrapes to the leather binding, and a few of the volumes are beginning to show a bit of wear to the heads and tails of the spine, but most of the volumes are in fine condition. It is overall a superb set in excellent condition after almost 125 years. ***CITATION: NCBEL III, 672 (Edinburgh publication). This is the first London publication of the same set. ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is a large and heavy set, therefore additional postage will apply. ***PLEASE CONTACT US for more comprehensive details on this lovely set, we are happy to furnish additional pictures and information.
