FLORE DES SERRES ET DES JARDINS DE L'EUROPE, ou descriptions des plantes les plus rares et les plus meritantes, nouvellement introduites sur le continent ou en Angleterre. (volumes1-10 first series, and 11-15 second series, plus 16-21 of 23 of Annales générales d'horticulture).
Gand -1875 1845 - 21 volumes, handsomely leather bound in full dark morocco by Tuckett binder to the Queen. 2261 numbers to the plates - being A TOTAL OF 2231 COLOURED PLATES , being 1441 single page colour plates, 395 double page colour plates each numbered as two plates (790), 7 quadruple page coloured plates numbered as four and 63 other uncoloured lithographed plates- with accompanying text. A FINE RUN OF THIS RARE PERIODICAL- two additional volumes were published in 1880 and, as in this case, are frequently wanting. The double page plates are listed in the text as two plates and the quadruples as four- thus the numbering of the descriptive text. The colour plates are lithographs, or colour printed lithographs, mostly with the addition of some hand colouring with gum Arabic. A PROFUSION OF STUNNING BOTANICAL PLATES. This great Belgium periodical, which matches, if not supersedes the other Botanical periodicals of the nineteenth century for its decorative plates, appeared for more than 35 years. The plants shown were from the nursery of van Houtte and were said to have been for sale therein. Many exotic plants figure and the work is especially notable for the craftsmanship of the lithographers Severeyns, Stroobant and de Pannemaeker. The periodical ceased shortly after the death of van Houtte who was the sole editor for the last eight years. Condition- some marginal spotting but mostly confined to the first 10 volumes and only affecting 11 plates badly. The numeration of the plates is not always straight forward as usual with this periodical- a good run in a handsome binding. Reference - Great Flower Books, pp. 157-159; Nissen BBI 2254.
