A New Edition. 'Designed as a continuation of Mr. Hume's History'. Featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece. Three of four volumes. Tobias George Smollett (19 March 1721 17 September 1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. Smollett began what he regarded as his major work, A Complete History of England, from 1755 to 1757. Revised in 1758, the Complete History was offered for sale in 100 sixpenny weekly pamphlets, and by 28 September 1758Smollett noted with satisfaction that weekly sales exceeded 10,000 copies. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally, smart with slight rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Light foxing to the endpapers but otherwise generally clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..
