- Pencil and water-colour, signed 'J.Smit' (lower right), early label mounted on verso, inscribed in blue pencil 'Wheatear, Whincahat, & Stonechat Section VI. Facing page 480'. A fine ornithological water- colour, being original artwork for Richard Lydekker's Royal Natural History, published London 1893-96. Lydekker's work included examples from the greatest natural history artists of the period, such as Joseph Smit and his son Pierre-Jacques, prolific artists who contributed to many important zoological publications. In the 1880s and 1890s for example, both father and son produced artwork for the monumental British Museum (Natural History) Catalogue of the Birds in the Museum. Cf.
