[GEELONG] Photographic portraits of Rebecca Greenwood (née Morrison) and her children
1865-1870. Five albumen print photographs, carte de visite format, each approximately 100 x 60 mm; two with the imprint of George William Perry, Melbourne (mother and daughter); one with the imprint of Wilmot & Key, Geelong (boy holding tall-backed chair, dated May 1867); one with the imprint of Turner's New Portrait Rooms (hand coloured), and one without a studio imprint (boy with legs crossed); all are in very good condition. These fine portraits of members of one of Geelong's most prominent families of the mid-nineteenth century were sourced from the same photograph album as the carte de visite portrait of the young George Morrison ('Chinese Morrison', adventurer and writer) held in the collection of the National Library of Australia titled George Ernest Morrison as a young child, wearing a black mourning ribbon, Geelong, Victoria, 1863 [picture] / E. de Balk (nla.pic-vn4605514). The present group includes a studio portrait of George Ernest Morrison's mother, the beautiful and elegant Rebecca Morrison (née Greenwood) and four studio portraits of her children - one of whom, although unidentified, is almost certainly George Ernest Morrison (b. 1862). Rebecca Greenwood (1837-1932) married George Morrison, founding principal of Geelong College, within weeks of her arrival in Melbourne in November, 1859, and was to play a significant role in the development of the school. Rebecca and George were to have eight children, one of them being George Ernest 'Chinese' Morrison (see Australian Dictionary of Biography entry: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/morrison-george-ernest-chinese-7663
