Satan in Goray [SIGNED BY BOTH THE AUTHOR AND THE ARTIST]
Sweetwater Editions, New York 1981 - 1/475. Quarto. 163, [3]pp. Original half Chieftan morocco and Dutch cloth with gold lettering and tooling on spine and front cover. Book housed in its publisher's paper covered slipcase. Frontispiece. Originally published in installments in a literary magazine called "Globus," "Satan in Goray" was Singer's first published work. The story is set in the years following 1648, when the Chmelnicki massacres, considered one of the greatest Jewish catastrophes, occurred. The book describes the Jewish messianic cult that arose in the village of Goraj and the effects of the 17th century faraway false messiah Shabbatai Zvi on the local population. This striking limited edition is superbly illustrated with 10 original etched plates signed in pencil by artist Ira Moskowitz, along with 40 additional drawings in the text. Number 191 of a limited edition of 475 copies signed on the colophon by both Isaac Bashevis Singer and Ira Moskowitz. This edition includes new illustrations, revisions to the text, and a new introductory essay titled "The Making of a First Book." Minor age-toning and tiny abrasion along edges of slipcase. Slipcase in overall good to good+, binding and interior in near fine to fine condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
