The Works of Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, Viscount St. Alban, and Lord High Chancellor of England in ten volumes.
London : printed for J. Johnson . [and 23 others] by H. Bryer. 1803 - Ten octavo (213mm x 140mm) volumes in full mottled calf, gilt spine and black spine labels with gilt lettering, gilt outer edges. pp :ix, lxxvi, 527, frontis engraving of Bacon engraved by James Fittler; viii, 562; v, 534; vii, 549; xiii, 589; xiv, 419, [127 index]; xv, 476, fold-out table; xv, 454; vii, 569; vi, 335, [103 index]. Texts in English and Latin. Volumes mostly in very good condition. All but one volume have sturdy bindings - vol. one has it's front board detached, but is present. Bindings of Vols one & two are the most worn with wear to spine-ends, along with bumps and wear to all corners; bindings of vols 3 to 10 have lighter bumps and wear at these points; and gilt decorations on all spines are mostly clear, although lettering on nine of the twenty labels may be missing from those that have either fallen or have partially fallen away. Edges also age-dulled, but all text-blocks are tight with slightly age-toned leaves. The margins of some leaves of vols. one & two have light pencil marks, and can easily be erased if required. Both fold-outs in neat, crisp condition. A decent set.
