The founder of the Quaker movement, George Fox, addresses his flock
Unpublished, Unpublished 1653 - An original manuscript address to Quaker friends from the founder of the movement, George Fox, dating from 1653, and apparently endorsed by the writer. The fragment is written in brown ink on a piece of laid paper with partial watermark (19.5x7cm) and comprises seven lines of text followed by the initials: 'Gff' - about 150 words in total. The paper is stained and has old fold marks and a little loss along the bottom edge and the lower left hand corner which does not affect the text. To the verso is written (with uncertain intent) in a mid seventeenth century hand: 'g.ff this is Copied 1653'. The main text is certainly not in Fox's hand although the use of his initials on the verso closely resembles the way that Fox would endorse a document and may well be in his hand. The script requires some care in reading but is not obscure except where some of the staining makes it difficult to interpret. The text begins: 'I doe you all round and charge and commaund in yee living God of Life to be faithful in ye and as[s]ur[e]d of the Life of/ God which he hath you given, and watch over friends if yt w[hi]ch is yours you may discerne.' He asks that the 'Garden of ye Lord may be dressed by you in his wisdome', bidding the Lord 'keep you all in his spirit' and 'see yt freinds meete togeither, and be fed together, in ye spirit. of ye Lord', insisting that this is 'ye word of ye Lorde for you[rs] this is. Gff:' We have not been able to locate a printed version of this text in George Fox's works. Taking the manuscript date of 1653 at face value, this document dates from the first phase of Fox's preaching career at the time that his ad hoc meetings began to become more organised as he settled at Swarthmoor in present day Cumbria. The document was found preserved inside an envelope mounted and labelled as such on the pastedown of an early twentieth century edition of Fox's works.
