Cape 1931 - A cheaply made second edition of Cape's 1926 first ed. with a 37pp eulogistic biography of Thomson written by Britain's first Labour Prime Minister, J. Ramsay Macdonald. This biography gives the outline of Thomson's military career and paints the portrait of a dedicated soldier and man of Socialist principles. 'Smaranda' itself is unlike any other Great War memoir by a British general. Falls rated it highly: '.There have been plenty of soldiers who were good writers and even some who were good novelists, but it is rare to encounter a soldier who is master of such delicate, almost feminine prose as this.' Quite apart from the love story, Thomson's diplomatic and military escapades in Roumania give a convincing insight into the power-politics at play, 1915 - 1917, as the Allies and the Central Powers, mired in the Western Front, wrestled in the Balkans to out-flank each other diplomatically and then militarily. A brilliant Great War book. This copy is in near Fine condition with spotless cloth to boards, minimal edgewear, good corners and bright gilt to titles with a crease in the cloth to the corner of the rear board. The VG jacket is not price-clipped but shows wear with minor loss to top of spine panel and edge-wear to the bottom. No foxing. One previous ownership inscription in pencil to the front endpaper (from which a bookplate has been removed): 'Sheila Macdonald, 1938' . This is presumably the Prime Minister's youngest daughter, b.1910 - d.1994. When the eldest Macdonald daughter married, Sheila took over as her widowed father's 'hostess' and traveled with him as such. She was with him on an overseas trip in 1937 when he died. The year 1938 would therefore have been an apt moment for her to go through his library and assert ownership of his books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
